Pioneering Transnational Education Between India and Australia
In a major advancement for international academic collaboration, the University of Melbourne and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Tirupati announced a 2+2 Bachelor of Science Integrated (Honours) dual degree program. Signed in New Delhi by Professor Moira O'Bryan, Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Melbourne, and Professor Santanu Bhattacharya, Director of IISER Tirupati, the agreement creates a direct pathway for Indian science undergraduates to earn credentials from both institutions.
The initiative aligns with India's National Education Policy (NEP 2020) vision for internationalizing higher education through dual-degree frameworks and credit-transfer models.

Curriculum Mapping, Majors, and Admission Pathways
The curriculum has been co-designed by academic faculties from both institutions to ensure seamless credit articulation across all four years of study. Enrolled students will complete foundational sciences at IISER Tirupati during Years 1 and 2 before transitioning to Melbourne for advanced specialization across diverse disciplines:
Core Academic Majors: Biotechnology, Chemistry, Ecosystem Science, Environmental Science, Food Science, Genetics, Physics, and Plant Science.
Admission Process: Selection will operate outside the standard IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) intake route. Instead, a specialized qualifying assessment will evaluate applicants, capping the inaugural cohort at approximately 50 students to maintain strict academic standards.
Cost Benefits and Advanced Post-Graduate Pathways
By completing the first half of the degree in India, students achieve a significant reduction in the total tuition and living costs associated with a full four-year degree in Australia. Furthermore, graduates automatically join the Science Global Scholars Program and gain eligibility for advanced standing credit should they choose to pursue Master's or PhD programs at the University of Melbourne.
"Together, the University of Melbourne and IISER Tirupati are fostering a new generation of globally connected scientists equipped to contribute solutions to challenges that transcend national boundaries. Partnerships such as this one create valuable opportunities for both institutions to learn from one another and strengthen research links," stated Professor Moira O'Bryan, Dean of Science at the University of Melbourne.
To support the launch, both institutions will jointly host the Frontiers of Science for Global Advances public symposium series across major Indian metros, highlighting cutting-edge collaborative research in quantum technologies, climate science, and sustainable agriculture.
