According to the commission, 2,472 new local cases were recorded in Shanghai, with the remaining instances reported in 17 other provincial-level regions on the mainland, including 79 in Jilin, 26 in Heilongjiang, and 14 in Beijing.

In the previous 24 hours, the government reported 17,528 locally transmitted asymptomatic infections of the new coronavirus, with 16,983 local asymptomatic carriers found in Shanghai.

China’s COVID-19 death toll has risen to 4,776, according to Xinhua, with 51 fatalities reported in the last 24 hours, all in Shanghai.

Meanwhile, Beijing, China’s capital, is on high COVID-19 alert after 21 new community cases were reported on Sunday.

Furthermore, in recent months, China has seen increases in its major cities, notably Shanghai, where citizens have been on lockdown for four weeks due to a coronavirus outbreak.

Shanghai, the country’s financial center, has been hit hard by the COVID-19 outbreak and is in severe need of medical attention and necessities like food.

Notably, China’s well-publicized ‘zero-covid’ plan, which the authorities credited with bringing the country out of the pandemic until recently, is disintegrating as fast-rising cases force huge lockdowns similar to those seen in 2020.
